香川県高松市中山町にある根香寺（ねごろじ）は、四国八十八箇所第八十二番札所として知られる天台宗の寺院です。五色台の主峰・青峰山の中腹に位置し、四国霊場の中でも標高が高く、特に紅葉の名所として親しまれています。

寺の創建は弘仁年間（9世紀初頭）と伝えられ、開基は 空海（弘法大師）と、その甥にあたる 円珍（智証大師）とされています。空海が密教修行の地として「花蔵院」を開き、後に円珍が霊木から千手観音像を彫刻して「千手院」を建立しました。この霊木の切り株から芳香が立ちのぼり続けたことから、二つの院を総称して「根香寺」と呼ばれるようになったと伝えられています。

本尊の木造千手観音立像は国の重要文化財に指定されており、33年に一度だけ開帳される秘仏です。また、境内には香川県指定文化財である五大明王像も安置されています。歴史の中では一時焼失の危機もありましたが、江戸時代に高松藩主の 松平頼重 によって再興され、現在の姿に受け継がれました。さらに根香寺には、怪物「牛鬼（うしおに）」を弓の名手が退治したという伝説が残り、現在も牛鬼の角や像が魔除けとして祀られています。信仰と伝説、そして豊かな自然が調和する霊場として、多くの参拝者や遍路に親しまれている寺院です。

Negorōji Temple, located in Nakayama-chō, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a Tendai sect temple known as the 82nd temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Situated on the slopes of Mount Aomine, the main peak of the Goshikidai range, it is one of the highest-altitude temples on the Shikoku pilgrimage route and is particularly cherished as a renowned spot for autumn foliage. The temple’s founding is said to date back to the Kōnin era (early 9th century), with Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) and his nephew, Enchin (Chishō Daishi), regarded as its founders. Kūkai established “Kakō-in” as a place for esoteric Buddhist practice, and later, Enchin carved a statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon from a sacred tree and founded “Senju-in”. It is said that because a fragrant scent continued to rise from the stump of this sacred tree, the two temples collectively came to be known as “Negō-ji”. The principal image, a wooden standing statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon, is designated a National Important Cultural Property and is a secret Buddha only unveiled once every 33 years. The precincts also house statues of the Five Great Myō-ō, designated Cultural Properties of Kagawa Prefecture. Though facing destruction by fire at one point in its history, the temple was restored during the Edo period by Matsudaira Yoriyasu, Lord of the Takamatsu Domain, and has been preserved in its present form. Furthermore, Negōji preserves a legend of a master archer vanquishing the monstrous “Ushi-oni” (ox demon). To this day, the ox demon’s horns and statues are enshrined as talismans against evil. As a sacred site where faith, legend, and rich natural surroundings harmonise, it remains a beloved temple for many worshippers and pilgrims.

根香寺（ねごろじ）。四国遍路の82番札所でありながら真言宗ではなく天台宗の寺院。五色台の青峰（標高449.3m）の中腹にあります。日当たりによって紅葉の具合が異なるため、緑・黄・赤へと遷移していく色を楽しむことができます。

Negoro-ji, temple No. 82 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, is located on the Goshikidai plateau extending to Sakaide City and Takamatsu City. Drive west from downtown Takamatsu City to reach the temple in 20 minutes. Negoro-ji is named after the scent emitted from the sacred tree that was cut when the thousand-armed Kannon was created. Come to graceful Negoro-ji to experience the scent of autumn.　When you pass through the magnificent main gate of the temple, the refined, stone-paved approach to the temple extends straight. Rows of maple trees on both sides turn red in mid-November.

根香寺の歴史・由来
五色台の主峰、青峰山に佇ずむ、かつての巨刹。五つの山に金剛界曼荼羅の五智如来を感じた弘法大師は、密教修行の地とし青峰に「花蔵院」を建立されました。後に大師の甥にあたる智証大師が訪れた際、山の鎮守である一之瀬明神に出会い、「この地にある毘沙門谷、蓮華谷、後夜谷に道場を作り、蓮華谷の木で観音像を作りなさい」というお告げをうけました。智証大師は蓮華谷の木で千手観音像を彫造し、「千手院」を建て安置しました。この霊木の切り株から芳香を放ち続けたことから「花蔵院」、「千手院」を総称して根香寺と名づけられたといわれます。根香寺は後白河天皇の帰依も厚く隆盛を極めました。後に、高松藩主らにより再興され、この時に天台宗へ改宗されました。

寺には次のような伝説があります。昔、青峰山には人間を食べる恐ろしい怪獣、牛鬼が棲んでいました。村人は、弓名人山田蔵人高清に頼み退治してもらうことしました。しかし、高清が山へ入れど、なかなか牛鬼が現れません。そこで高清は根香寺の本尊に願をかけました。すると21日目の満願の暁に、牛鬼が現れ口の中に矢を命中。逃げる牛鬼を追うと2ｋｍほど西の定ヶ渕で死んでいるのを発見しました。高清は牛鬼の角を切り寺に奉納。その角は今でも寺に保存されています。また牛鬼の絵は魔よけのお守りとして親しまれています。

根香寺の見どころ
五大尊像・牛鬼の像・万体観音（本堂前の凹字型回廊に、全国の信者が奉納した約三万三千体の観音像が並んでいます。）
