The Japanese word for kite is ‘tako’, which is represented by the same pronunciation as ‘tako’ meaning octopus. In Tsuda, kites are called ‘ika’, meaning squid.

正確には、ここ津田の松原のある香川県さぬき市津田町には、古くから「枡イカ（ますいか）」と伝わる伝統の凧（たこ）が伝わっています。

もともと中国から遣唐使と共に日本にやってきたときは「イカのぼり」と呼ばれていました。それが「凧揚げ（たこあげ）」に変わったのは、庶民の間で凧が流行って事故が頻発したため幕府が「イカのぼり禁止令」をだしそれに対して、「これはイカじゃなくてタコ」と呼んだのが凧揚げという呼び名になったという説があります。

More precisely, in Tsuda-cho, Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture, where Tsuda’s Matsubara is located here, a traditional kite (tako) called ‘masuika’ has been handed down from ancient times.

When they originally came to Japan from China with the Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty, they were called ‘ika noboris’. The name was changed to ‘takoage’ (kite-flying) when the shogunate issued a decree banning the use of kites among the general populace and the frequent accidents that occurred with them.

津田町では古くから「桝イカ」。絵柄は、長方形の和紙の中央に、ひし形と円。ひし形は一升枡（いっしょうます）、円は一斗枡（いっとます）を表し、五穀豊穣や大漁の願いが込められています。

・ひし形の一升枡（いっしょうます）は、日本酒を飲んだり節分の豆まきなどに使われる容器。
・円形の一斗枡（いっとます）は、米等の穀類の体積を量る容器。
