【レポート】寿ぎ百様（ことほぎひゃくよう）～森須磨子しめ飾りコレクション展～。写真レポートはこちら。この展示かなりオススメです。グラフィックデザイナーでしめ飾り研究家でもある森須磨子さんのしめ飾りコレクションがずらっと、香川県高松市の古民家博物館「四国村」のギャラリーに登場します。四国村ギャラリーは、四国村内にある安藤忠雄さん設計の美術館です。

This exhibition seems to be quite interesting. I strongly recommend. “Shime-kazari” is the decoration of straw rope. The collection of Ms. Sumako Mori who is graphic designers will appear in “Shikoku-mura village gallery” which is the old houses museum at Takamatsu city, Kagawa Pref., Japan. Shikoku-mura gallery was designed by architect Mr. Tadao Ando.

Shimenawa (“enclosing rope”) are lengths of laid rice straw rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion. They can vary in diameter from a few centimetres to several metres, and are often seen festooned with shide. A space bound by shimenawa often indicates a sacred or pure space, such as that of a Shinto shrine.

Shimenawa are believed to act as a ward against evil spirits and are often set up at a ground-breaking ceremony before construction begins on a new building. They are often found at Shinto shrines, torii gates, and sacred landmarks.

They are also used around yorishiro (objects capable of attracting spirits, hence inhabited by spirits). These notably include certain trees, in which case the inhabiting spirits are called kodama, and cutting down these trees is thought to bring misfortune. In cases of stones, the stones are known as iwakura.

A variation of the shimenawa is used in sumo wrestling by yokozuna (grand champions) during their entrance ceremonies to denote their rank. This is because the yokozuna is seen as a living yorishiro (formally shintai), and as such is inhabited by a spirit.（Shimenawa – Wikipedia）

手前の荒々しいものは、イリコ漁で有名な伊吹島（いぶきじま）のしめ飾り。

有り難いことに直接みることができます。なんという贅沢。

年末年始は大忙しで日本各地を巡っているそうです。

ちょろけん
京都で流行した「門付け」（大道芸の一種）が名前の由来。
ちょろけんは、大きな顔にユニークな目鼻を描いて芸を披露したそうです。
その姿かたちをしめ飾りで表現しています。

The name originates in “Kadozuke”, a kind of street peforming, was popular in Kyoto. It is said that Choroken, drew unique eyes and nose on his large face, gave performance. The figure is expressed in Shimekazari.

宝船
福を呼ぶ七福神たちが乗る船。米俵などを乗せた宝の船には、五穀豊穣の祈りが込められており、香川県あたりに多い形。

Ship, The Seven Deities of God Fortune, bring good luck, ride on. Treasure ship, has straw rice bag aboard, is with a prayer of bumper harvest and the shape is popular mostly in Kagawa prefecture.

杓子
1年の福を杓子ですくいとるという願いが込められている。愛媛県松山市では、上部に橙（だいだい）を2個飾り付ける家もある。この橙は、正月におりてくる神様の目だという説がある。

With a prayer to scoop up good luck with a dipper. Some families decorate two bitter oranges on the upper side in Matsuyama City, Ehime pref.. There is a theory that this bitter orange is eyes of God, comes down at New Year’s Day.
