【香川 9/1-10/31 解体】琴電屋島駅―近代化産業遺産が姿を消す – [Kagawa: 1 September–31 October – Demolition] Kotoden Yashima Station – A heritage site of modern industrial heritage disappears

香川県高松市の琴電屋島駅は、1929年（昭和4年）に建てられた木造駅舎で、屋島観光の玄関口として長く地域に親しまれてきました。2009年には、経済産業省の「近代化産業遺産」に認定され、琴電の鉄道施設や車両、橋梁などとともに、香川の近代化を物語る貴重な産業遺産の一つでした。

しかし、2026年6月の台風6号による被害を受け、建物の安全性について調査・検討が行われた結果、老朽化も踏まえ、駅舎を解体することが決まりました。工事は2026年9月1日から10月31日までの予定です。安全確保を最優先とした判断である一方、近代化産業遺産に認定された約100年近い木造駅舎が失われることは、地域の鉄道史、屋島の観光史を考えるうえでも大きな出来事です。「近代化産業遺産に認定されているから残る」のではなく、認定後も保存・活用の仕組みがなければ、歴史的建造物は失われてしまう。琴電屋島駅の解体は、地域に残る産業遺産をこれからどう守り、活かしていくのかを考える機会にもなりそうです。

Kotoden Yashima Station in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a wooden station building constructed in 1929 (Shōwa 4) and has long been a familiar feature of the local area as the gateway to tourism in Yashima. In 2009, it was designated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a ‘Heritage of Industrial Modernisation’, and, together with Kotoden’s railway facilities, rolling stock and bridges, stood as one of the valuable industrial heritage sites that tell the story of Kagawa’s modernisation.

However, following damage caused by Typhoon No. 6 in June 2026, an investigation and assessment of the building’s safety was carried out. Taking its state of disrepair into account, it was decided that the station building would be demolished. The demolition work is scheduled to take place from 1 September to 31 October 2026. Whilst this decision prioritises safety above all else, the loss of this wooden station building—which has stood for nearly 100 years and was designated as a ‘Modernisation Industrial Heritage’ site—is a significant event in terms of the region’s railway history and the history of tourism on Yashima. It is not the case that ‘it will be preserved simply because it has been designated as a Modern Industrial Heritage Site’; without mechanisms for its preservation and utilisation even after designation, historic buildings will be lost. The demolition of Kotoden Yashima Station is likely to serve as an opportunity to consider how the region’s remaining industrial heritage can be protected and utilised in the future.

高松のシンボルである屋島の麓にある琴電屋島駅。経済産業省の近代化産業遺産に認定されている建物です。屋島登山鉄道の開業に伴い、1929年（昭和4年）に今の場所に移転しました。軒の出が浅い緩勾配のスレート屋根や、平面の凹凸を抑えた外壁が、平明でグラフィカルな外観を構成しています。モダンな住宅をイメージさせる駅舎は、屋島観光を支えた昭和初期の大衆文化を反映しています。（ことでんー近代化産業遺産ー）

Kotoden Yashima Station at the foot of Yashima is the symbol of Takamatsu city. The building was certified to the modernization of industrial heritage of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. This architecture was moved here, when Yashima mountain railway opened in 1929. Design of the station building looks like the modern housing. It reflects the early Showa era of popular culture that supported tourism Yashima.

2026年9月1日（火）から解体工事が開始する琴電屋島駅。改めて撮影させていただきました。名残惜しむように数名の方が写真を撮られていました。築97年の木造駅舎。おつかれさま、ありがとうございました！
