瀬戸内の錦帯橋など、100年前の日本の写真が英国で話題に – 100 year old photos show medieval Japan

玉村康三郎（たまむら こうざぶろう）さんという明治時代の写真家が、
アメリカ・ボストンにあるJ. B. Milletという出版社の依頼で
100万枚もの日本の風景や暮らしを彩色写真で残しました。
これらの写真が、イギリスでオークションにかけられ話題になっています。
Mr. Kozaburo Tamamura is a photographer at Meiji period in Japan. He left a million colored photos of Japan at the request of J. B. Millet which was a publisher at Boston, America. They are mounted in an oblong folio within its original box and are expected to fetch £800 at auction through Woolley and Wallis auctioneers of Salisbury, Wiltshire.

この、1910年に撮られた玉村康三郎さんの写真は、
日本初の観光プロモーション写真といえます。
Pictures taken by Mr. Kozaburo Tamamura in 1910 were the first ever to be used to promote tourism in Japan. The collection of pictures are the first ever used to promote tourism in the country.

1673年に建てられた山口県岩国市の錦帯橋（きんたいきょう）は、
今も美しい姿で架かっていてGoogleストリートビューで見ることができます。
Water under the bridge: The Kintai-kyo bridge, built in 1673, still stands today. You can see the bridge on the Google Maps Street View.
