27 May has been recognised as ‘Dragon Quest Day’ by the Japan Anniversary Association.
Game designer Yuji Horii, the creator of the popular ‘Dragon Quest’ (DQ) series, hails from Awaji Island (Sumoto City, Hyogo Prefecture). He was named an honorary citizen of Sumoto in February 2018. At the award ceremony, Mr Horii remarked, ‘Growing up running through fields and mountains [as a child] was the inspiration for Dragon Quest,’ and ‘Growing up in a place that was like a miniature world, with the sea, mountains and rivers, proved useful when creating Dragon Quest. I have been helped by so many people, and that is how I have been able to get this far.’ We highly recommend taking a drive around Awaji Island whilst listening to the Dragon Quest soundtrack. Awaji Island, with its sea, mountains and rivers, is brimming with adventure.

ragon Quest, formally published as Dragon Warrior in North America until 2005, is a series of Japanese role-playing video games created by Yuji Horii and his studio Armor Project. The games are published by Square Enix (formerly Enix), with localized remakes and ports of later installments for the Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch being published by Nintendo outside of Japan. With its first game published in 1986, there are eleven main-series games, along with numerous spin-off games. In addition, there have been numerous manga, anime and novels published under the franchise, with nearly every game in the main series having a related adaptation.
The series has had a significant impact on the development of console role-playing games, and introduced a number of features to the genre. Installments of the series have appeared on various computers, consoles, handheld devices, and mobile phones. Early in the series, the Dragon Quest games were released under the title Dragon Warrior in North America to avoid trademark conflict with the unrelated tabletop role-playing game DragonQuest. Square Enix did not register the Dragon Quest trademark for use in the United States until 2002.
Yuji Horii (also written as Yuuji Horii; born January 6, 1954) is a Japanese video game designer and scenario writer best known as the creator of the Dragon Quest series of role-playing games, supervising and writing the scenario for Chrono Trigger, as well as the first visual novel adventure game Portopia Serial Murder Case.
