アートの島 直島にあるアートな老舗文具店 「村尾商店」 – The Murao store in Naoshima

向島集会所のよっちゃんに直島でお会いした時、
「すごい文房具屋があるよ」と教えてくれたので、
好奇心旺盛なせとうち暮らしのメンバーはさっそくいってみました。
When I met Mr. Yocchan of Mukaejima, He said “There is a great stationery store in Naoshima”. We, menbers of Setouchikurashi went to the shop.

この時の取材の様子は「せとうち暮らし10号 特集：もうひとつの直島」をぜひ。
（もちろん村尾さんも登場します)
This report is seen in the magazine “Setouchi kurashi vol.10”. (Of course Mr. Murao is on it!)

そこにあったのは、まさに「これぞアート」
という芸術的なタバコ・文房具屋、村尾商店。
島の人に聞いたところ、直島銭湯で有名な大竹伸朗さんも
「彼こそ直島の遺産だよ」とおっしゃっていたんだとか。
This is what I call great ART! The artistic cigar & stationery store “MURAO store”. Somebody told me, famous artist Mr. Shinro Otake who made “The public bathhouse in Naoshima” said that he was inherited wealth of Naoshima.

到着しました。直島 村尾商店。
Tobaccoのロゴタイプがすでにかっこいい。この店構え。
We arrived Murao store at Naoshima. Cool logo design!!

まずは、懐かしい文房具の数々が出迎えてくれます。
You can see good old stationaries.

絵の具。60円は安すぎます。
This is paint is 60 yen. too low.

懐かしいデザインのノート。
The cover of notes are good old style.

このデザインも素晴らしい。
This is also cool!

Mask. There are anythig.

並べられた消しゴムまでアートに見えてきます。
The stacked eraser also looks like art works.

壁かけられた浮世絵や山水画のセンスがまた素晴らしい。
UKIYOE (Wood Block Prints) and SANSUIGA (Chinese monochrome landscape painting) are decorated tastefully.

拡大すると塩田の跡がよくわかります。
You can see the trace of solar saltern.

おまけでこちらが戦後まもなく米軍が撮影した直島の航空写真です。(1947.10.11撮影 国土地理院)

大きな笑顔。
Big smile

ゴミ箱に貼られたコピー「資源の終焉」。名コピーです。
The cool phrase “end of resouse” is on garbage box.

店主の村尾智さん。
Owner of Murao store, Mr. Satoru Murao.

「気分転換」と書かれたタバコ入れ。
もともとは灰皿だった箱をタバコ入れに使うという逆転の発想！
いろんな銘柄がここにはいっていて、
おみくじのように何が出てくるかは、その時のお楽しみ。
とにかく、とことん楽しみながら、タバコを吸っていらっしゃるわけです。
“a change of pace” is written on snuff-box. He can enjoy a whole range of cigarette from the box. It is like a paper fortune. He really enjoy somoking.

小さな文字で「ニコチンは知的能力を高める」と書いてあります笑。
There are small letters, “Nicotine improve our intellectual performance” on the box.

お話していると「こんなのもある」とだしてくれた
菊の御紋で飾られたオブジェ。
When we talk with him, he show us this object which he made. The Imperial crests of the chrysanthemum are on it.

讃岐かがり手まりと一緒に、ボールが吊られています。
Thread balls are  hanging on wires.

柱や梁にもなにやら貼ってあります。
You can see something on the beam and column.

近づいてみると、数々の名言が！
「商は笑にして勝なり」「商いは飽きない」
「お金持ちはお札の向きが揃っている」
「傷はぜったい消毒するな」「泣いて生まれて笑って死のう」
「９割の病気は自分で治せる」「気にしない」
As you look closely, you can see words of wisdom.
“Business comes from your smile”
“Never tire of business”
“Don’t disinfect your wound”
“Birth with crying, death with smile”
“You can recovery from 90% of disease by yourself.”
“Never mind”

シールのつかったあとの枠がガラスに貼られています。
ゴミすらもグラフィックにつかってしまう審美眼、恐るべし。
The frame of seals also become art work with his aesthetic.

タバコ好きの村尾さん。もちろん各社銘柄が揃っています。
Mr. Murao are a committed smoker.
Of course there are many kinds of cigarette brand.

極めつけがこれ。お話していたら見せて下さいました。
新聞で気になった文字をひたすら集めて貼っていく、スクラップ・アート。
These are the masterpiece of him. Mr. murao has collected words from newspaper and make Scrap Art.

よく見ると。。
Looking closely…

ちいさな「たばこ」の文字がぎっしり。
You can see many many small words “Tabacco”.

こちらは、灰皿。完全に楽しんでつくっていますね。
This is ashtray. He really enjoy to make it.

熱心にいろいろと説明してくださる村尾さん。
Mr. Murao explains to us passionately.

灰皿のまんなかにあるバネは、タバコを休憩させる場所。
お客さんがきて火を消してしまうと味が落ちるので、
急な用事の時などはここにいったんタバコを休めるのだとか。
とことん、タバコを楽しんでいる様子。
The spring in the ashtray is the place to keep cigarette without putting out a lit in order to keep it good taste.

せとうち暮らしのみんなでもりがっていると、
さらに奥の部屋へ招いてくれて下さいました。刀鍔を模様にしたのれん。
He invite us to see other his art works. This is a short split curtain of which pattern is guard of a sword.

よく見ると「MURAO」の文字が。Marlboroのロゴですかね 笑。
Look at detail of it. Is this ligo of the Marlboro?

村尾さん、フクロウが好きなんだとか。
He likes a owl.

また会いに行きたくなる村尾さん。
直島の人間国宝だと思います。
I would like to meet him again. He is a living national treasure of Naoshima.

村尾さんのように人生を楽しむためにつくるアートこそ
本当のアートだなと思いました。素晴らしいです。
世界に伝えたい直島遺産、村尾商店。
I think this is real art which are made to enjoy his life. They are excellent masterpiece. The world heritage of Naoshima “Murao Store”.
