麝香鳳蝶（ジャコウアゲハ）　Chinese windmill

麝香鳳蝶（ジャコウアゲハ）。鹿（雄のジャコウジカ）からとる香料「麝香（じゃこう）」の甘い香りがすることからこの名前がついています。香りの成分、フェニルアセトアルデヒドは、蝶や蜂の交信物質として使われ、タバコやチョコレートの香料に使われる甘い香り。
ジャコウアゲハは、兵庫県姫路市の蝶に指定されています。蛹は、姫路城で殺された怪談・皿屋敷の「お菊」にちなんで「お菊虫」と呼ばれ、戦前までは姫路城やお菊神社で売られていました。お菊虫は、志賀直哉の『暗夜行路』にも登場します。

Byasa alcinous has a wingspan reaching about 9–10 centimetres. The basic colour of the wings is black or dark-brown.The hind wings have long tails and a chain of red spots at the edges. The thorax and the abdomen are mainly black on the upperside and the underside, with several black spots, while the other areas are red. Adults are on wing from May to August in two generations.
