瀬戸大橋の色を「ライトグレー」と指定したのは昭和を代表する日本画家の一人、東山魁夷さんです。お祖父様が、瀬戸大橋のかかる櫃石島（ひついしじま）出身ということで、島がよく見える場所に「東山魁夷せとうち美術館」があり、美術館のカフェ・ラウンジからは瀬戸内の多島美を楽しむことができます。美術館のある沙弥島は、香川県側から陸続きになっており車で行くことのできる島で、瀬戸内国際芸術祭の開催島でもあるのでとても人気のスポットです。

Kaii Higashiyama (1908-1999) is a celebrated Japanese landscape painter. After he passed away, his family generously donated more than 270 lithographs to Kagawa Prefecture, since the painter’s grandfather was from Hitsuishijima Island in Sakaide, Kagawa pref., Japan. It was Higashiyama who proposed that light gray color would suit the Seto Ohashi Bridge. Visitors can enjoy a splendid view of the Seto Inland Sea from the Lounge, which is a good resting place. Refreshments are available at Cafe at the Lounge.

建築設計は、谷口吉生さん。丸亀市猪熊弦一郎現代美術館MIMOCA、慶應義塾湘南藤沢中等部・高等部、豊田市美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館などを手がけた世界的な建築家です。


東山魁夷さんのお祖父様が出身の櫃石島を眺めることのできるカフェ・ラウンジ。「な・ぎ・さ」は東山すみ夫人が命名。このラウンジからの眺めが、国土交通省・四国地方整備局などがすすめる「四国八十八景」に選定されています。


名物かまどの和菓子、かるかん羊羹・せとうち気分。四国八十八景選定と、瀬戸大橋開通30周年を記念して誕生したお菓子です。　「海」をイメージした羊羹の上に、「瀬戸の島並み」「雲」「瀬戸の夕焼け」を和菓子のカルカンで色分けして表現されています。

ご先祖地、櫃石島（ひついしじま）
このラウンジは、はるか遠方に東山魁夷画伯ゆかりの櫃石島が望めるように設計されています。画伯の祖父新吉は、瀬戸内海に浮かぶ塩飽諸島のひとつ櫃石島に生まれ育ちました。

江戸時代末期、新吉青年は豊かな自然と温暖な気候に恵まれた櫃石島から、江戸にでます。そして強靭な開拓精神で激変する明治維新を乗り越え、事業家として横浜地で大成功を収めます。東山画伯の本名もまた新吉、祖父の何あやかって名付けられました。

東山画伯は、東京美術学校を卒業したのち、ドイツに留学しますが、帰国する時に瀬戸内海を通り、その美しい風景に安らぎを覚えたと言います。しかし船員から一見穏やかに見える瀬戸内海が、実は目に見えないところで潮の流れが速く、船乗りにとっては魔の海なのだと教えられます。その後、櫃石島を主題として重厚な色調とともに自然の姿の奥深さを表現した作品が「暮潮（Evening Tide）」（昭和34年）です。（美術館カフェ・ラウンジ内の解説より一部抜粋）

Kaii Higashiyama (1908-1999) is a celebrated Japanese landscape painter. After he passed away, his family generously donated more than 270 lithographs to Kagawa Prefecture, since the painter’s grandfather was from Hitsuishijima Island in Sakaide, Kagawa. The Prefecture therefore decided to build the Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi Art Museum to open his works to the public.

It was Higashiyama who proposed that light gray color would suit the Seto Ohashi Bridge. With a spectacular view of the bridge spread out before visitors, historic heritage with a romantic atmosphere of Man’yo Period, and the natural beauty of the Seto Inland Sea, the museum offers a place where visitors can relax their mind.

In this museum, explaining the association between Higashiyama and Kagawa Prefecture, the museum’s collections will be exhibited under specific themes. Moreover, we would like to promote exchange with other museums at various levels regarding Higashiyama, such as organizing special exhibitions of artworks by Higashiyama and other related Japanese style painters.

Architecture
The architecture is characterized by the two main walls, which stand east and west, parallel to the coastline. The large walls were designed to block out the sea view from the park in front of the entrance, where olive trees are planted. Through the entrance, visitors enter the Exhibition Room 1 on the 1st floor, whose walls are 6 meters high. As the visitors see pictures, they gradually move to the Exhibition Room 2, a long rectangular room spreads from east to west on the 2nd floor. Passing through the Digital Gallery next to the Exhibition Room 2, the visitors get to the Lounge. The Lounge space is designed that extensive scenery of the Seto Inland Sea in front, suddenly comes into view of the visitors’ eyes.
Located at Entrance Hall, the Museum Shop offers a range of items based on design and works in the museum’s collection. The selection includes postcards, framed pictures, books, etc. The Entrance Hall also equipped with the Film Screen Corner, which introduces Kaii Higashiyama to the visitors through the visual images.
Visitors can enjoy a splendid view of the Seto Inland Sea from the Lounge, which is a good resting place. Refreshments are available at Cafe at the Lounge.
