「かわいい」の語源は、「顔映ゆし（かほはゆし）」で顔を向けていられないという意味から来ています。元来、「不憫だ」とか「気の毒だ」という意味の言葉だった「かわいい」という言葉が、正反対の「愛らしい」に変わったのは中世後半。その理由は明らかになっていないのですが、「気の毒だから助けてあげたい」という気持ちが「愛らしい」に転じたのだと考えると、小さなものや儚いものに心を寄せるとても日本人らしい言葉と言えます。

“Kawaii” means cute in Japanese. Although “Kwaisou” is a derived word of “Kawaii”, it means poor and pathetic. In the late medieval period, the meaning of “Kawaii” changed from poor to cute which has the opposite meaning　in Japanese. When Japanese people see small and fragile things, want to help them and feel charming. Therefor, “Kawaii” and “Kawaisou” have opposite meanings, even if they sound similar. They are suitable words for Japanese.
