小豆島寒霞渓（かんかけい）。日本三大渓谷美のひとつ、日本書紀にも記述がある奇勝です。約1300万年前の火山活動によってできた安山岩（あんざんがん）層や火山角礫岩（かざんかくれきがん）層が、風化と侵食を受けて作り出した奇岩や崖地の絶景です。寒霞渓には表12景、裏8景、小豆島最高峰の星ヶ城（標高817m）などへの登山道があり、片道1時間ほどで登ることができます。行きはロープウェイで登り、帰りは山を徒歩で下るルートもオススメです。国指定の名勝（国指定文化財等データベース）。

Kankakei Gorge, Shodoshima Island. One of the three most beautiful valleys in Japan, it is a scenic wonder described in the Chronicles of Japan. It is a spectacular sight of strange rocks and cliffs created by weathering and erosion of the andesite and volcanic conglomerate formations formed by volcanic activity approximately 13 million years ago. There are trails leading up to the 12 front views, 8 back views and Hoshigajo (817 m above sea level), the highest peak on Shodoshima, which can be reached in about an hour each way. We recommend taking the ropeway up the mountain on the way there and walking down the mountain on the way back.

Kankakei – Wikipedia

The gorge of Kankakei (Kanka-kei, literally ‘cold mist valley’) is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty on the island of Shōdo-shima, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. Part of the Setonaikai National Park, the heights rise to 812 m. The area is celebrated for its Japanese maple trees. Volunteers formed a preservation society in 1898 and when, in 1912, expropriation of the area was attempted, a soy sauce magnate stepped in to ensure its preservation. In 1927 Kankakei was selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan.

寒霞渓 – Wikipedia

寒霞渓（かんかけい）は、香川県の小豆島にある渓谷。国指定の名勝。概要星ヶ城と美しの原高原の間、範囲は東西7キロメートル、南北4キロメートルに及ぶ大渓谷で、そこに約1300万年前の火山活動により堆積した疑灰角礫岩などが、度重なる地殻変動と風雨による侵食により、断崖や奇岩群を形成している。『日本書紀』にも記述がある奇勝で、元々は鍵掛（鉤掛）、神懸、神駆などの字が当てられてカンカケの名で呼ばれてきた。これはガンカケ、ガッカケなどとともに崩れた崖や絶壁などを指す語であるが、これを元に明治初期の儒学者、藤沢南岳が寒霞渓と命名した。当地は、大正12年（1923年）3月7日に「神懸山（寒霞渓）」として国の名勝に指定され、また1934年の瀬戸内海国立公園設置の契機となった、大渓谷と海を一望できる景勝地である。ほか、日本三大渓谷美、日本三大奇勝や日本百景、「21世紀に残したい日本の自然100選」等に選ばれている。新緑や特に紅葉の季節は多くの観光客で賑わう。
