日本最古の湯釜、道後温泉・湯釜薬師　Dōgo Hot Spring Water Stone Receptacle

湯釜は、浴槽内の温泉の湧出口に設置するもので、これは現在の道後温泉本館ができた1894年（明治27年）まで使用されていたものです。愛媛県指定有形文化財。
直径166.7cm、高さ157.6cm、花崗岩製です。奈良時代の天平勝宝年間（749〜757年）につくられたと伝えられます。
湯釜上部に置かれt宝珠の「南無阿弥陀仏」の六字名号は、河野通有の依頼により一遍上人が刻んだものと言われています。
湯釜本体に刻まれた温泉の効験に関する文は、天徳寺の徳応禅師の撰文になるもので、1531年（享禄4年）、河野通直が石工を尾道から招いて刻ませたものです。

Sekizo Yugama

A yugama is a stone receptacle set up at the outlet of a hot spring. This yugama was used until 1894, When the present Dōgo Spa main building was completed. It is 166.7cm in diameter, 157.6cm in height, and is made of granite. It is said to have been made around the middle of the Nara Period (8th century). Six Chinese characters, “na-mu-a-mi-da-butsu”(Hail, Amida Buddha). are carved in the upper part of the receptacle. It is said that the priest Ippen engraved this upon the request of Kono Michiari. The main body of the receptacle bears an inscription describing the efficacy of the hot spring. It was composed by the Zen priest Tokuo of Tentokuji Temple and engraved in 1531 by a craftsman summoned from Onomichi in present-day Hiroshima pref. by Kono Michinao, of the powerful Kono clan. 道後温泉。日本国内でもひときわ古い3000年もの歴史を持つといわれる温泉です。

以前、小豆島の寒霞渓にあるものを紹介した大阪探勝わらぢ會の石碑。
1906年（明治39年）頃に発足した大阪の地図出版社経営者主催の旅行団体です。
