1945年（昭和20年)8月6日午前8時15分、人類史上初の原子爆弾（リトルボーイ / Little Boy）が、米軍のB29爆撃機から投下され、上空約600mで爆発し、多くの命がうばわれました。原爆ドームは、戦争の悲惨さを現代に伝える、全人類にむけた平和記念碑です。元の建物は、チェコ人の建築家 ヤン・レツル（Jan Letzel）が1915年（大正4年）に設計した広島県物産陳列館です。

At 8.15am on 6 August 1945, the first atomic bomb (Little Boy) in human history was dropped from a US B-29 bomber, exploding about 600m in the air and claiming many lives. The Atomic Bomb Dome is a peace monument for all mankind, conveying the horrors of war to the present day. The original building was the Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall, designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel in 1915.

戦後、風化が進んで崩落の危険が生じ、市民からは「原爆の惨事を思い出すから取り壊してほしい」という声もあり、広島市は原爆ドームの保存には消極的でした。取り壊しの可能性が高まっていた当時の流れを大きく変えたのはひとつの日記でした。

After the war, the city of Hiroshima was reluctant to preserve the A-bomb Dome, as it had become weathered and was in danger of collapsing, and some citizens wanted it demolished as it reminded them of the horrors of the atomic bombing. It was one diary entry that significantly changed the course of events at the time, when the possibility of demolition was on the rise.

楮山ヒロ子（かじやまひろこ）さんが残した日記「あの、いたいたしい、産業奨れい館だけがいつまでもおそるげん爆を世にうったえてくれるだろうか（1959年8月6日付、原文そのまま）」

1歳の時に被爆し、15年後白血病で亡くなった楮山ヒロ子（かじやまひろこ）さんが残した日記に、「あの、いたいたしい、産業奨れい館だけがいつまでもおそるげん爆を世にうったえてくれるだろうか（1959年8月6日付、原文そのまま）」と記されていたのです。その日記に心を打たれた人々によって、原爆ドームの保存運動がはじまりました。

Hiroko Kajiyama, who was exposed to the atomic bomb when she was one year old and died of leukaemia 15 years later, wrote in her diary: ‘I wonder if only that awful, awful industrial museum will ever tell the world about the terrible bombing (6 August 1959, original in Japanese)’. The diary touched the hearts of the people who started the campaign for the preservation of the A-bomb Dome.

1966年（昭和41年）広島市議会が永久保存を決議。
1995年（平成7年）被爆50年の年。国の史跡に指定。
1996年（平成8年）ユネスコの世界遺産（文化遺産）登録

原爆ドームが見えます。


レンガ。香川県観音寺市の讃岐煉瓦が製造したレンガが、産業奨励館（原爆ドーム）の壁面に使われています。

原爆ドーム（旧広島県産業奨励館）に使われたレンガの一部は、現在の香川県観音寺市で製造されたもの - The bricks of the Atomic Bomb Dome are made of Sanuki bricks from Kanonji, Kagawa Pref.
原爆ドーム（旧広島県産業奨励館）に使われたレンガの一部は、現在の香川県観音寺市で製造されたものです。明治時代、観音寺市の室本地区では良質な粘土が採れたことからレンガ製造が盛んになりました。当時製造された「讃岐煉瓦」は品質が高く評価され、鉄道や港湾施設、官公庁建築など全国各地へ出荷されていました。その一つが、1915年（大正4年）に完成した広島県産業奨励館（現在の原爆ドーム）です。

1945年8月6日の原子爆弾投下によって建物は大きな被害を受けましたが、観音寺産のレンガは現在もその一部が残り、世界遺産・原爆ドームの歴史を支えています。香川県で焼かれたレンガが、平和の象徴として今なお広島の地でその姿をとどめていることは、あまり知られていない地域の歴史の一つです。

西平和大橋：ゆく

イサム・ノグチさんがデザインした橋の欄干。平和大橋と西平和大橋の欄干は、アメリカの彫刻家イサム・ノグチさん(1904～1988)が設計し、1952年（昭和27年)3月に橋が完成しました。


イサム・ノグチさん、「設計の際、私は、建設の理念、すなわち新たに自己の生活を建設する者の特に再建広島の理念を伝えるものとすべきであると考えていました。従って、私は、建設を意味する名前をその橋に付けたいと思います。」


平和大橋：つくる
もともとこの橋を「いきる」と名付けていましたが、同じ時期に、「生きる」という映画が公開されていたため、「いきる」から「つくる」に変更したというエピソードがあります。

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (広島平和記念碑, Hiroshima Heiwa Kinenhi), originally the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, and now commonly called the Genbaku Dome, Atomic Bomb Dome or A-Bomb Dome (原爆ドーム, Genbaku Dōmu), is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The building was the only structure that remained standing in the area around the atomic bombing of Hiroshima at the end of World War II. The ruin of the hall serves as a memorial to the over 140,000 people who were killed in the bombing. It is permanently kept in a state of preserved ruin as a reminder of the destructive effects of nuclear warfare.

原爆ドームは、第2次世界大戦末期に人類史上初めて使用された核兵器(かくへいき)により、被爆(ひばく)した建物です。ほぼ被爆した当時の姿のまま立ち続ける原爆ドームは、核兵器の惨禍(さんか)を伝えるものであり、時代を超(こ)えて核兵器の廃絶(はいぜつ)と世界の恒久(こうきゅう)平和の大切さを訴(うった)え続ける人類共通の平和記念碑(へいわきねんひ)です。

広島県物産陳列館(ひろしまけんぶっさんちんれつかん)の建設
原爆ドームのもとの建物は、チェコ人の建築家ヤン・レツルの設計により、大正4年(1915年)広島県物産陳列館として完成しました。建物はれんが造りの3階建てで、正面中央部分は5階建ての階段室、その上に楕円形(だえんけい)のドームが載(の)せられていました。物産陳列館は、県内の物産の展示や即売(そくばい)、商工業に関する調査・相談などの業務を行っており、美術展や博覧会などの文化事業の会場としても利用されました。その後、広島県立商品陳列所、広島県産業奨励館(ひろしまけんさんぎょうしょうれいかん)と改称(かいしょう)し、戦争末期の昭和19年(1944年)からは内務省中国四国土木出張所、広島県地方木材株式会社など官公庁等の事務所として使用されました。
