愛媛県八幡浜市の「五反田の柱祭り」は、戦国時代の悲しい出来事をきっかけに始まった、お盆の伝統火祭りです。約400年前、元城を守ろうとした修験者・金剛院円海が味方に敵と誤認され命を落とし、その後の疫病流行を彼の祟りと恐れ、鎮魂のために祭りが始まったと伝わります。
毎年8月14日夜、王子の森公園に高さ20m超の柱が立てられ、その先端の籠を目がけて、火を灯した松明を勢いよく投げ入れます。松明が空を舞い、火玉が夜空を乱舞する光景は迫力満点で、かつ幻想的。地元住民や帰省客も参加し、観客は2000人を超える盛況ぶり。昭和40年に愛媛県指定文化財となったこの祭りは、地域の絆を深め、夏の夜を熱く彩る伝承行事として今も愛され続けています。

The ‘Gotanda no Hashira Matsuri’ in Yawatahama City, Ehime Prefecture, is a traditional Bon Festival fire festival that began as a result of a tragic event during the Warring States period. Approximately 400 years ago, a monk named Kongo-in Enkai, who was trying to defend Motoyama Castle, was mistaken for an enemy by his own allies and lost his life. Fearing that the subsequent epidemic was caused by his curse, the festival began as a way to appease his spirit.
Every year on the night of 14 August, a pillar over 20 metres tall is erected in Oji no Mori Park, and participants throw lit torches with force toward the basket at its tip. The sight of the torches soaring through the air and fireballs dancing across the night sky is both thrilling and fantastical. Local residents and returning visitors participate, with over 2,000 spectators in attendance. Designated as a cultural property of Ehime Prefecture in 1965, this festival continues to be cherished as a traditional event that strengthens community bonds and adds excitement to summer nights.

先端に麻木の入った漏斗状のかごを取付けた20メートル余りの柱を立てます。


神事から始まります。


松明に火が灯されます。


各地区から集まった若者が1mほどの細綱に麻木を束ねて火をつけ、それを柱上のかごを狙って一斉に投げ上げます。


投げども、投げども、なかなか火はつきません。意外に難しいんですね。


だんだんと投げる力も弱まってくるので、途中で休憩を挟みつつ、投げ続けます。

五反田に金剛院という修験者がいた。戦国時代、元もと城主摂津豊後守と萩森城主宇都宮房綱が戦った時、金剛院は九州の旅先から急きょ立ち返り、夜中に松明たいまつをともして元城に登ろうとしたが、城兵が敵と誤って射殺した。江戸時代になって五反田に悪病が流行したが、これは金剛院の崇たたりであると噂うわさが広まり、金剛院の霊を鎮めるために柱祭が始まったと伝えられている。　毎年８月14日の夜、五反田河原（防災上昭和50（1975）年から王子森公園）に、先端に麻木の入った漏斗状のかごを取付けた20メートル余りの柱を立て、神事が行われたあと、各地区から集まつた若者が1メートルほどの細綱に麻木を束ねて火をつけ、それを柱上のかごを狙って一斉に投げ上げる。命中して麻木かごが燃えあがって行事が終わる。夜空に火玉が乱舞する勇壮な光景と、競争が伴う投げ松明の火祭りは、伝承奇習の行事として親しまれている。
