《リングワンデルング》― 大島に刻まれた「記憶の道」を歩く。瀬戸内国際芸術祭で公開されている鴻池朋子（こうのいけともこ）さんの《リングワンデルング》は、ハンセン病療養所・大島青松園を舞台にした体験型アート作品です。

作品の舞台となる「相愛の道」は、1933年（昭和8年）に療養所の若い入所者たちが自ら切り開いた約1.5kmの散策路。長年、草木に埋もれていましたが、鴻池朋子が2019年に再び道をよみがえらせ、作品として生まれ変わりました。「リングワンデルング」とは、霧や吹雪の中で方向感覚を失い、知らぬ間に円を描くように歩いてしまう現象を意味するドイツ語です。この作品では、大島の歴史や自然、人々の記憶をたどりながら歩くことで、鑑賞者自身が作品の一部となります。

2022年には、閉じた円環だった道が海へと続く「脱出階段」へと拡張され、新たな物語が加わりました。島の美しい自然と、隔離の歴史を静かに見つめながら歩く体験は、単なる鑑賞ではなく、自分自身や他者とのつながりを考える時間となります。なお、海へ下る区間は急な崖を含むため、毎月第2土・日の開館日に実施されるガイドツアーでのみ鑑賞できます。瀬戸内海を望む絶景とともに、大島の歴史や記憶に触れることのできる、瀬戸内国際芸術祭を代表する作品の一つです。

Ringwandel — Walking the ‘Path of Memory’ carved into Oshima. Tomoko Konoike’s Ringwandel, currently on display at the Setouchi International Art Festival, is an immersive art installation set within the Oshima Seishōen leprosy sanatorium.

The ‘Path of Mutual Love’, which serves as the setting for the work, is a walking trail approximately 1.5 km long that was cleared by young residents of the sanatorium themselves in 1933 (Shōwa 8). Although it had long been overgrown with vegetation, Tomoko Konoike revived the path in 2019, transforming it into an artwork. ‘Ringwandern’ is a German term referring to the phenomenon of losing one’s sense of direction in fog or a snowstorm and, without realising it, walking in a circular pattern. In this work, by walking whilst tracing the history, nature and memories of the people of Oshima, the viewer themselves becomes part of the artwork.

In 2022, the path—which had previously been a closed loop—was extended to become the ‘Escape Staircase’ leading down to the sea, adding a new narrative. The experience of walking whilst quietly contemplating the island’s beautiful natural surroundings and its history of isolation is more than mere observation; it becomes a time to reflect on one’s connection with oneself and with others. Please note that as the section descending to the sea includes steep cliffs, the work can only be viewed during guided tours held on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month, when the venue is open. Offering breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea alongside an opportunity to engage with Oshima’s history and memories, this is one of the flagship works of the Setouchi International Art Festival.

瀬戸内国際芸術祭の作品《リングワンデルング》は、現代美術作家・鴻池朋子（こうのいけともこ）さんによる作品です。舞台となる大島では、作家が2019年に復活させた「相愛の道」をたどります。この道は、1933年（昭和8年）に若い入所者たちが自ら切り開いた約1.5kmの散策路で、瀬戸内海の美しい景色を望むことができます。

作品の一部である浜へ下るルートは、急な崖や岩場を通るため、毎月第2土・日曜日の大島開館日に実施されるガイドツアーでのみ鑑賞できます。安全確保のため、参加には服装や体調などの条件が設けられており、スタッフの案内に従って鑑賞する特別な作品体験となっています。

The work Ringwandel at the Setouchi International Art Festival is by the contemporary artist Tomoko Konoike. On Oshima, the island where the work is situated, visitors follow the ‘Path of Mutual Love’, which the artist revived in 2019. This path, approximately 1.5 km long, was carved out by young inmates themselves in 1933 (Shōwa 8) and offers beautiful views of the Seto Inland Sea.

The route down to the beach, which forms part of the artwork, passes through steep cliffs and rocky terrain; as such, it can only be viewed during the guided tours held on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month, when the Oshima Museum is open. To ensure safety, certain conditions regarding clothing and physical condition apply to participants, making this a unique art experience where visitors must follow the staff’s guidance.

Escape route via the beach
For the 2019 Triennale, Konoike restored a 1.5-kilometer walking trail on the island’s north end known as the Trail of Mutual Love. Viewpoints along the trail offer glimpses of the idyllic Seto Inland Sea, which is otherwise hidden from view. For the 2022 Triennale, a stone staircase is being added to give access to the beach below the cliff, serving as a secret escape route from the island topography which threatens to imprison. This new trail for survival will appear from the Triennale summer session.

《リングワンデルング》のうち、浜へ降りる道の部分は、ツアー形式でご案内します。事前に注意事項をよく読み、ご参加ください。

日程：毎月第２土日の大島開館日（※最新の状況は、作品公開スケジュールをご確認ください。）
時間：①12:30～、②13:15～の２回
参加方法：
開館日の９:20、もしくは11:15の高松発→大島行きの定期船に乗船ください。島に到着したらすぐに大島を巡るためのガイダンスをしますので、ツアー参加希望者はスタッフに申し出てください。

ご鑑賞にあたっての注意
《リングワンデルング》のうち、浜へ降りる道の部分は、険しい崖を降ります。
安全のため、ご鑑賞にあたって以下の事項を必ずご確認いただき、同意される方のみご参加ください（所定の参加同意書に署名していただきます※）。
※ 18歳未満の場合は、保護者の同意・署名が必要です。

角度の急な崖を５分ほど降ります。大きな段差や滑りやすい箇所、ひもを辿って降りる石段、角張った大きな石が散乱している浜辺があります。

・スカートや裾の広いズボンを着用している方

・作品内ではスタッフの指示に従ってください。
・荷物は荷物保管場所に置き、貴重品もポケットに入れるなどして、手に持たないでください。
・動きやすい服装で参加ください。また手袋などの安全対策グッズを持参するのもお勧めします。
・事故や服装の破損等が生じた場合には、自己責任（主催者がかけている損害保険の範囲内での対応）となりますので、ご了承ください。（何らかの事情により、保険金が支払われない場合は、崖下への転落など大事故になった場合でも個人で対応いただくことになります）。
・当日、雨天の場合や現場状況によっては、ツアーを中止し、作品説明のみになる場合があります。
