屋島で出会う春景色。瀬戸内海と桜が織りなす絶景散歩 – Spring scenery on Yashima: a stroll through the breathtaking views created by the Seto Inland Sea and cherry blossoms

香川県高松市のシンボル、屋島（やしま）周辺の春を探して歩いてみました。

屋島周辺は、歴史と絶景、そして春の花が重なり合う桜の名所です。源平合戦の古戦場として知られる屋島の山上からは、高松市街と瀬戸内海の多島美を一望でき、春にはそこに桜の彩りが加わり、格別の風景が広がります。山上には四国霊場第84番札所の屋島寺があり、石段沿いには江戸時代の1665年に高松藩士・松平可正が植えた「可正桜」が今も受け継がれています。かつて7株あったうち現存する1株は移植されたもので、歴史を今に伝える貴重な一本です。

また、麓にある四国村では、3月末から4月初旬にかけて桜とチューリップが同時に見頃を迎え、さらに黄色い花を咲かせるウコン桜も楽しめるなど、春ならではの華やかな景観が広がります。屋島山上拠点の「やしまーる」や、四国霊場84番札所「屋島寺」、85番札所「八栗寺」、庵治（あじ）石の産地「五剣山」周辺などを巡りながら歩けば、歴史・自然・花が一体となった、屋島ならではの春の魅力を体感できます。

I went for a walk around Yashima, the symbol of Takamatsu City in Kagawa Prefecture, to experience spring there.

The area around Yashima is a famous spot for cherry blossoms, where history, breathtaking views and spring flowers come together. From the summit of Yashima, known as the ancient battlefield of the Genpei War, one can take in a panoramic view of Takamatsu city and the archipelago of the Seto Inland Sea; in spring, the addition of cherry blossoms creates a truly exceptional landscape. On the mountaintop stands Yashima-ji Temple, the 84th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Along the stone steps, the ‘Kasei Cherry Tree’—planted in 1665 during the Edo period by Matsudaira Kasei, a samurai of the Takamatsu Domain—still stands today. Of the seven trees that once stood there, the single surviving specimen was transplanted and is a precious tree that conveys history to the present day.

Furthermore, at Shikoku Village at the foot of the mountain, cherry blossoms and tulips reach their peak simultaneously from late March to early April, and visitors can also enjoy the Turmeric Cherry Blossom, which blooms with yellow flowers, creating a vibrant spring landscape. As you walk around the area, visiting the ‘Yashimaru’ centre on the summit of Mount Yashima, the 84th and 85th stations of the Shikoku Pilgrimage—Yashima-ji Temple and Yakuri-ji Temple respectively—and the vicinity of Mount Goken, a source of Aji stone, you can experience the unique spring charm of Yashima, where history, nature and flowers come together as one.

屋島寺の門前の桜

可正桜（かしょうざくら）
この老桜は、高松藩士、松平（まつだいら）半左衛門（はんざえもん）可正（かしょう）が老後の楽しみとして、1665年（寛文5年）に、屋島寺石段の左右に7株を植えました。そのうち6株は枯れ、残った一株を現在の地に移植したものです。

Kashō Cherry Tree
This ancient cherry tree was planted in 1665 (the 5th year of the Kanbun era) by Matsudaira Hanzaemon Kashō, a samurai of the Takamatsu Domain, who planted seven trees on either side of the stone steps leading to Yashima-ji Temple as a pastime in his later years. Six of these trees withered away, and the remaining single tree was transplanted to its current location.

When the cherry trees are in full bloom
And someone passes and asks their name,
Tell him they are Kashō’s Cherry Trees.
