高知県本山町、山あいの町に突然現れる、どこか異国のような雰囲気を持つ古民家カフェ「カフェ ミシシッピ」。店内には店主が集めたフィギュアや古い電話、写真、オブジェなどが所狭しと並び、独特の世界観をつくっています。高知フィルムコミッションも「独創的な外観の古民家カフェ」「世界中から集めたオブジェが並ぶ、ミステリアスで不思議な空間」と紹介しています。 店名の「ミシシッピ」は、アメリカ南部のミシシッピ州に由来します。店主はかつて渡米し、ミシシッピ州でアートを学びながら、ブルースのミュージシャンとしても活動していたと紹介されています。現在の店にも、その経験が色濃く反映されています。

In Motoyama Town, Kochi Prefecture, nestled amongst the mountains, ‘Cafe Missy Sippy’ is a traditional Japanese house café that suddenly appears, exuding a somewhat exotic atmosphere. Inside, figurines, old telephones, photographs and other objects collected by the owner are packed tightly together, creating a unique atmosphere. The Kochi Film Commission describes it as ‘a traditional Japanese house café with a distinctive exterior’ and ‘a mysterious and enchanting space filled with objects gathered from all over the world’. The name ‘Missy Sippy’ derives from the US state of Mississippi in the American South. It is said that the owner once travelled to the United States, where he studied art in Mississippi whilst also performing as a blues musician. That experience is still strongly reflected in the café today.

料理もアメリカ南部などの食文化を感じさせる一方、カレーやガパオライス、手作りケーキ、コーヒー、紅茶など幅広いメニューが並びます。名物のひとつが「MOJOカレー」。また、ジャマイカからアメリカ南部へ伝わったとされる「ハミングバードケーキ」なども紹介されています。

さらに興味深いのが、店内に漂う「ブルース」の空気です。ミシシッピ州はブルースの重要な発祥地のひとつ。山深い本山町で、アメリカ南部の音楽やアート、食文化が独自の形で受け継がれているところに、この店のおもしろさがあります。 本山町は北緯約33度45分に位置し、ミシシッピ州の中心部もおよそ北緯33度にあります。偶然とはいえ、吉野川の源流域にある本山町と、遠く離れたミシシッピを結ぶ小さな接点になっています。

音楽、アート、食、そして山あいの本山町という土地が重なって生まれた、ひとつの文化空間。嶺北を訪れた際には、食事だけでなく、その空間そのものを楽しみたい場所です。

Whilst the cuisine evokes the culinary culture of the American South, the menu also features a wide range of dishes, including curry, gaeng pao rice, homemade cakes, coffee and tea. One of the specialities is the ‘MOJO Curry’. The menu also features dishes such as ‘Hummingbird Cake’, which is said to have been brought from Jamaica to the American South.

What is even more intriguing is the ‘blues’ atmosphere that pervades the restaurant. Mississippi is one of the key birthplaces of the blues. The charm of this restaurant lies in the fact that, in the deeply mountainous town of Motoyama, the music, art and culinary culture of the American South are being passed down in a unique way. Motoyama is situated at approximately 33°45’ north latitude, whilst the centre of Mississippi is also located at roughly 33° north latitude. Although a coincidence, this forms a small point of connection between Motoyama, situated in the headwaters of the Yoshino River, and the distant state of Mississippi.

A cultural space born from the interplay of music, art, food and the mountainous setting of Motoyama Town. When visiting Reihoku, this is a place where you’ll want to enjoy not just the food, but the atmosphere itself.

珈琲。ファイヤーキング（Fire-King）。アメリカのガラス製造メーカー「アンカーホッキング社」が1941年に立ち上げた耐熱ガラス食器のブランド。乳白色を混ぜ込んだ独特の温かみある質感。厚手でぽってりとしたフォルムと、日常使いできる丈夫さが人気です。

高知県本山町の「カフェ・ミシシッピ」を訪れるなら、店をつくったアーティスト・藤島晃一（ふじしまこういち）さんの活動を知っておくと、この場所がより面白く見えてきます。藤島晃一は、絵画、写真、音楽を横断して活動してきたアーティストです。若い頃からブルースに惹かれ、アメリカを旅して現地の音楽や文化に触れ、ブルースマンとして演奏するとともに、街や人々を写真に記録し、絵を描いてきました。その経験を本山町に持ち帰って生まれたのが「ミシシッピ」です。

Koichi Fujishima is an artist whose work spans painting, photography and music. Drawn to the blues from a young age, he travelled across the United States to immerse himself in the local music and culture; whilst performing as a blues musician, he also documented the towns and people he encountered through photography and painting. ‘Missy Sippy’ was born when he brought these experiences back to Motoyama Town.

藤島晃一（ふじしま・こういち）

高知県本山町を拠点に活動する画家、写真家、ブルースマン。20歳頃にブルースに惹かれ、スリーピー・ジョン・エスティスのレコードジャケットをきっかけに音楽を始めたと紹介されています。その後、アメリカやイギリスなどをギター一本で旅し、路上でブルースを演奏するとともに、絵画や写真の制作を続けてきました。

アメリカ滞在では、ミネアポリス、オクラホマシティ、ウィスコンシンなどを巡り、現地の人々やブルース文化に触れながら絵を描き、写真を撮影。特にアメリカ南部のブルース文化との関わりが深く、現地のブルースマンを撮影した写真も残しています。

音楽では、スライドギターやドブロを用いたブルースを日本語で歌うことを特徴としています。イギリスBBCでの生演奏も経験し、音楽評論家のピーター・バラカンにも紹介されるなど、地方を拠点としながら国内外で活動してきました。2014年にはP-VINEからベスト盤『通り過ぎれば風の詩』、2016年には『立ち止まれば』を発表しています。

絵画では、人物や旅の風景などを独特のタッチで描き、写真や文章と組み合わせたコラージュ的な作品も制作しています。アメリカを旅した際の写真、絵、日記などを組み合わせたスクラップブックも、その活動を象徴する作品の一つです。

本山町では、自宅を改装した「Cafe Missy Sippy（カフェ・ミシシッピ）」を営み、さらにその向かいにはアトリエ兼ライブスペースとして「MOJOYAMA MISSISSIPPI」を構えてきました。カフェそのものも藤島さんの作品世界の一部であり、絵、写真、音楽、旅の記憶、世界各地から集めたオブジェが一体となった空間になっています。つまり藤島晃一さんは、「アメリカのブルースを日本で演奏するミュージシャン」というだけではなく、旅と音楽、写真、絵画を一つの表現として結びつけ、本山町で独自の文化空間をつくってきたアーティストと捉えると、その活動がよく分かります。

Koichi Fujishima

A painter, photographer and blues musician based in Motoyama Town, Kochi Prefecture. It is said that he was drawn to the blues at around the age of 20 and began playing music after being inspired by a record sleeve featuring Sleepy John Estis. He subsequently travelled through the United States and the United Kingdom with nothing but his guitar, performing blues on the streets whilst continuing to create paintings and photographs.

During his time in the United States, he travelled through Minneapolis, Oklahoma City and Wisconsin, painting and taking photographs whilst engaging with the local people and blues culture. He has a particularly deep connection with the blues culture of the American South and has left behind a collection of photographs of local blues musicians.

Musically, he is known for singing blues in Japanese, accompanied by slide guitar and the Dobro. Having performed live on the BBC in the UK and been featured by music critic Peter Barakan, she has been active both domestically and internationally whilst based in the regions. In 2014, she released the greatest hits album *When the Wind Blows By* on P-VINE, followed by *When I Pause* in 2016.

In her painting, she depicts figures and travel scenes with a distinctive style, and also creates collage-like works combining photographs and text. A scrapbook combining photographs, paintings and diary entries from his travels in the United States is one of the works that epitomises his creative practice.

In Motoyama Town, he runs ‘Cafe Missy Sippy’, a café housed in his renovated home, and opposite it, he has established ‘MOJOYAMA MISSISSIPPI’ as both a studio and a live music venue. The café itself forms part of Mr Fujishima’s artistic world, creating a space where paintings, photographs, music, memories of his travels and objects collected from around the world come together as one. In short, Koichi Fujishima is not merely a ‘musician who performs American blues in Japan’; his work can be better understood when viewed as that of an artist who has woven together travel, music, photography and painting into a single form of expression, thereby creating a unique cultural space in Motoyama Town.

四国の真ん中をほぼまっすぐ南北に貫いて、高知市と香川県高松市を結ぶ国道32号。高知市内から北に向かい、すぐにのどかな田園地帯に、さらに緑深い山沿いのワインディングロードに入って約１時間。大豊という小さな町から土佐街道に左折し、おどろくほど深い色の吉野川に沿って走って行くと、本山町をすぎたあたりのカーブを曲がったとたん、ものすごくカラフルに塗りこまれた一軒家が視界に飛び込んでくる。かわいらしいシャレコウベの看板脇に書かれている店名は『CAFE MISSY SIPPY』。もちろんアメリカのミシシッピ州と、「ちびちび飲るお姐さん」みたいな英語をかけて、これがアメリカのどこかのカレッジタウンにあればニヤリとするような名前だけど、高知の山中ではちょっと浮いている感じもする。でもとにかく、やっと来れた・・・ここが絵描きで、写真家で、スライドギターの名手でもあるブルースマン・藤島晃一のホームベースなのだ。
