Yoshimi Sugawara, who has visited over 1,000 local supermarkets across the country, is back! It seems there have been quite a few changes in Ms Sugawara’s life since her last appearance 13 years ago…? She’ll be sharing updates on her life and introducing us to a variety of local supermarkets from all over the country! From supermarkets beloved by locals to heart-warming hospitality, we’ll be showcasing local supermarkets that you’ll simply have to pop into whilst travelling.

徳島県三好市の大歩危駅前にある「歩危マート」は、単なるローカルスーパーではなく、大歩危・祖谷地域の暮らしや人のつながりが凝縮された場所です。40年以上店を切り盛りする山口由紀子さんの「地元の人が好きな味を届けたい」という思いのもと、店内には地元生産者による「地場産（じ〜ば〜さん）」コーナーが並び、観光客と地域住民が自然に交流する空間になっています。

併設の立ち食い処では、祖谷の郷土料理をアレンジした「ぼけ祖谷汁」を提供。巨大油揚げ「ぼけあげ」や岩豆腐、こんにゃくなど、祖谷らしい食材を味わうことができます。

また、歩危マートは地域活性化の拠点としても知られています。住民たちが台所に集まり、お酒を飲みながら自由に語り合う「キッチン会議」からは、大歩危駅活性化協議会など多くの活動が生まれました。形式ばらない「ほなやろか」の精神で、駅の交流空間づくりやイベント企画などを実践しています。

山口さんは「駅は人です」と語ります。歩危マートもまた、地域の人と観光客、そして外から訪れる外国人旅行者をゆるやかにつなぐ“駅”のような存在です。険しい山岳地帯に残る祖谷の原風景とは、景観だけでなく、人と人との温かなネットワークそのものなのだと感じさせてくれます。

Located in front of Ōboe Station in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, ‘Ōboe Mart’ is more than just a local supermarket; it is a place that encapsulates the way of life and community spirit of the Ōboe and Iya regions. Driven by Yukiko Yamaguchi—who has run the shop for over 40 years—and her desire to ‘deliver the flavours that locals love’, the shop features a ‘Jibasan’ corner stocked with produce from local growers, creating a space where tourists and local residents naturally mingle.

The adjoining standing-eatery serves ‘Boke Iya-jiru’, a reimagined version of Iya’s traditional soup. Here, you can savour ingredients characteristic of Iya, such as the giant deep-fried tofu ‘Boke-age’, rock tofu and konjac.

Furthermore, Oboke Mart is known as a hub for regional revitalisation. The ‘Kitchen Meetings’, where residents gather in the kitchen to chat freely over a drink, have given rise to numerous initiatives, including the Oboke Station Revitalisation Council. Guided by the informal spirit of ‘Let’s give it a go’, they are actively creating communal spaces at the station and organising events.

Mr Yamaguchi says, ‘The station is the people.’ The Boe Mart, too, serves as a kind of ‘modern station’, gently connecting local residents, tourists and foreign visitors from abroad. It makes one realise that the unspoilt landscape of Iya, preserved in this rugged mountainous region, is not merely about the scenery, but is the very essence of the warm network of human connections.

四国の地理的な中心、徳島県三好市にある大歩危（おおぼけ）峡は、風光明媚であることに加え、ラフティングやカヤックが楽しめるため、多くの観光客が訪れています。その一方、過疎化、高齢化が進み、交通の玄関口であるＪＲ大歩危駅も無人化されました。しかし、地域の方々は、厳しい状況の中でも、決してネガティブになることなく「楽しむ活性化」を実践されています。地域の人が寄り集まって、ワイワイと楽しく飲みながら意見交換をする「キッチン会議」からは、ＪＲ大歩危駅活性化協議会が生まれ、地域の活性化に貢献しています。その中で中心的な役割を果たされている、地域の商店「歩危マート」の山口由紀子さんと、四国旅客鉄道（取材当時。現：一般社団法人そらの郷）の出尾宏二さんにお話をうかがってきました。
