【香川 四国遍路 82番札所】根香寺（ねごろじ）の牛鬼 – Ox demon (Ushioni) of Negoroji temple

今から約450年くらいの昔、このあたりに人間を食べる恐ろしい怪獣、牛鬼が棲んでいて、人々を大変困らせていました。そこでこの地方の村人は、山田蔵人高清という弓の名人に牛鬼の退治を頼みました。高清は根来寺の本尊である千手観音に願をかけ、そのおかげで牛鬼を見つけ出し、見事に退治したそうです。そして、怪獣の角を根来寺に奉納して、その菩提を弔ったと伝えられています。牛鬼の像のデザインは、郷土史家で画家の市原輝士（いちはらてるし）先生によるものです。

About 450 years ago, there was a terrifying, people-eating beast called “Ushioni” that lived in this area, and the local villagers were troubled by it. So they decide to hire a master archer, Yanada Kurando Takakiyo , to slay the beast. Takakiyo prayed to Senju Kannon , the principle image of worship at Negoroji temple. It is said that thanks to his prayers, he successfully found the beast and slayed it. They then took the horns of the beast as offering to Negoroji temple , and prayed that the beast’s soul will rest in peace.

手水鉢

白猴欅（はっこうけやき）。樹齢1,600年とも言われるケヤキの老木です。香川県の天然記念物に指定されていましたが枯死しました。名の由来は智証大師が寺院創建の折にこの樹を伝って下りてきた白い猿が大師を手助けしたと言われる伝説に由来します。1991年（平成3年）に株を生えていた場所に置き、屋根を付け保存されています。

Ushi-oni – Wikipedia

The Ushi-Oni (Ox Oni (demon)), or gyūki, is a yōkai from the folklore of western Japan.　The folklore describes more than one kind of ushi-oni, but the depiction of a bovine-headed monster occurs in most. Ushi-oni generally appear on beaches and attack people who walk there.

Kagawa Prefecture, Takamatsu City
Yet another ushi-oni is depicted as a statue on the grounds of the Negoroji temple in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. It is a bipedal monster with huge tusks, spurred wrists, and membranes like a flying squirrel. A sign nearby explains that this creature terrorized the area about four-hundred years ago, and was slain by a skilled archer by the name of Yamada Kurando Takakiyo. He dedicated its horns to the temple, and they can still be seen to this day.

香川県五色台の青峰の根香寺には、牛鬼のものとされる角が秘蔵されている。これは江戸時代初めに青峰で山田蔵人高清なる弓の名手に退治された牛鬼とされ、同寺に残されている掛軸の絵によると、その牛鬼は猿のような顔と虎のような体を持ち、両前脚にはムササビまたはコウモリのような飛膜状の翼があったという。この掛軸と遺物は、現在では諸々の問題により一般公開されておらず、ネット上でのみ公開されている。

寺伝によれば、空海（弘法大師）が弘仁年間（810年 – 824年）にこの地を訪れ五色台の五つの峰に金剛界の五智如来を感得し密教の修行にふさわしい台地であるとし、その一つである青峰に一宇を建立し五大明王を祀り「花蔵院」と称し、衆生の末代済度を祈願する護摩供を修法をしたと伝えられている。その後、円珍（智証大師）が天長9年（832年）に訪れたさい、山の鎮守である市之瀬明神の化身の老翁に、蓮華谷の霊木で観音像を造り観音霊場の道場をつくるよう告げられた。すぐさま円珍は、千手観音像を彫像し「千手院」を建てて安置した。この霊木は香木で切り株から芳香を放ち続けたことから、この2院を総称して根香寺と呼ばれるようになったという。

後白河天皇から勅願所として帰依も厚く繁栄したが、戦国時代には兵火にあい衰微した。しかし、慶長年間に高松城主・生駒一正が復興、さらに寛文4年（1664年）高松藩初代藩主松平頼重が再興した。なお、このとき真言宗から天台宗に改宗された。

牛鬼伝説
江戸時代の初め頃、この地には牛鬼がいて人や家畜に危害を加えていた。そこで弓の名手であった山田蔵人高清に退治を依頼した。高清は3本の弓で見事に牛鬼を退治した。高清は退治した牛鬼の角を切り取り、根香寺に奉納し菩提を弔ったと伝えられている。現在、根香寺にはその牛鬼の角と呼ばれるものと、牛鬼の姿が描かれた掛け軸が伝わっている。
