I visited ‘Aizen-en’ in Fukumitsu, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture.

This is the creative haven where Shikō Munakata spent approximately six years and eight months from the war years through to the post-war period, producing many of his works. Through his life in Fukumitsu, whilst engaging deeply with the local people, folk art and nature, he built his unique world of ‘woodblock prints’.

Visiting Aizen-en brought to mind his friendship with Kunibo Wada of Kagawa. In the 1960s, the two developed a close bond, and Shikō Munakata held the large-scale work *Pines of Sanuki*, created by Kunibo Wada for the Kagawa Prefectural Government Office, in high regard. There are also records of Munakata visiting Kagawa and painting alongside Kunibo at the Tsuda Pine Grove. Shikō Munakata encountered the local landscape and people in Fukumitsu and created his works there. Kunbō Wada expressed the life and culture of Sanuki from his own unique perspective. When one considers that these two artists, who were active in the distinct regions of Toyama and Kagawa, both pursued their artistic expression whilst cherishing folk art and the local culture, their interaction becomes all the more fascinating.

In the Shōwa 40s, the printmaker Shikō Munakata, upon seeing the mural, praised it highly, stating: ‘I cannot help but marvel at the magnificent work of the master painter Kunibō Wada in the Grand Hall of the Kagawa Prefectural Government Building, which must surely be counted amongst the greatest of our time.’

There are several places in Fukumitsu that are closely associated with Shikō Munakata. The Shikō Munakata Memorial Museum ‘Aizen-en’, situated on the site where he lived whilst evacuated, was established after Toshihiko Ishizaki (1912–2003) donated a large number of Munakata’s works and the land to Fukumitsu Town (now Nanto City); it serves as a branch of this museum. The exhibition focuses on works created during the six years and eight months he spent there whilst evacuated. We also invite you to visit ‘Seikado’ and the ‘Shiko Munakata Archives’, which adjoin ‘Aizen-en’, as well as ‘Ryūgasai’, the residence where Munakata lived. ‘Aizen-en’ was the name given to Munakata’s former residence.

Riu-ga-sai
As Riu-ga-sai was the first newly built home Muneyoshi had ever owned, he was overjoyed and painted not only the wooden sliding doors and pillars inside the house, but even the undersides of the bath tub and chopping board. In particular, the lavatory is adorned with vivid depictions of bodhisattvas and celestial maidens, stretching from the ceiling to the walls. At the time, ‘Riu-ga-sai’ was the name given to the studio within the residence, but now that ‘Aizen-en’ has been built, it refers to the entire former Muneyoshi residence.
