高松港からすぐそこに見える鬼ヶ島こと女木島（めぎじま）。街からこんなに近いのに、意外と知られていない島の文化があります。香川県高松市の女木島と男木島では一年ごとに交代で夏祭りを行ってきました。一子相伝で伝わる縄で組まれた太鼓台を担ぎ、島を練り歩きます。女木島の名の通り、島の神様は女性で、嫉妬してしまわないように古来から女人禁制の祭りとして伝わっています。神様にむけて荒々しく太鼓台を落としたり転がし、祭りの最後には太鼓台ごと海にはいります。

Megijima (Megi Island), known as the ‘Onigashima (ogre’s island)’, can be seen just outside Takamatsu Port. Despite being so close to the city, there is a surprisingly little-known island culture. On Megijima and Ogijima in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, summer festivals have been held in turn every year. The islanders carry a drum stand made of rope, which has been handed down from generation to generation, through the island. As the name Megijima implies, the island’s deity is a woman, and the festival has long been forbidden to women in order to prevent them from becoming jealous. The drum stands are roughly dropped and rolled towards the deity, and at the end of the festival the drum stands are thrown into the sea.

2年に一度の開かれる厳格な祭り「住吉神社大祭」は、島の神様に捧げる女人禁制の男祭り。古くから伝わる規約を今も守り、島ならではの習俗を色濃く残す稀少なお祭りです。

特に2日目午後のクライマックスでは、1tを越える太鼓台を担いだまま、海に入るという島のお祭りならではの光景もみられます。島の高齢化に伴い、継承が危ぶまれる中、島の男たちの勇姿を、ぜひご覧下さい。

Especially, at moment of climax in the last day, men who shoulder “Taikodai (Japanese drums and children)” go into the sea. Because of aging of society, it is difficult to inherit the culture. Please, go and see the brave figure of men in the island.

以前、橋本浩暢さん (女木島大祭り中の組取締役、女木島観光協会副会長)から女木島のお祭りのお話を聞く機会がありました。
女木島の夏祭りは神様のために島の人が捧げる祭りなので、
他人に知られる必要がない。だからこれまで全く宣伝してこなかったそう。
こうして女木島の人が話してくださるのはとても貴重なことで、
「もう最後になるかもしれない、できるだけ多くの人にみてもらって島の文化を伝えてもらいたい」
という思いから、かなりの覚悟をもってお話してくださったようです。

女木島の祭では、島の男の子が一人前の男になっていく過程が見られます。太鼓台に乗る子供たちが神様なので見物客ですら見下ろすことは許されません。橋本さんの少年時代、太鼓台に乗ることが決まった時、お父様が泣いて喜んだそう。島の人にとって祭りの大役に抜擢されることはすごく名誉なこと、はじめは嫌々だった子も段々と気持ちが入っていくのだとか。

フィナーレでは「男に対して手加減するのは失礼」という考えがあるから担ぎ手は徹底的に暴れる。暴れてやるのが礼儀。島のお母さんたちは「もうやめてあげて」と涙を流すことも。それくらい熱くて本気の祭が女木島にはあります。

こんな島の文化がいまなくなろうとしています。担い手の問題で、もしかしたら今回か次回の夏祭りが最後になるかもしれない。「祭を見に来てもらってこの祭の価値を島の外の人達に伝えて欲しい」と橋本さん。この機会に、ぜひ女木島に伝わる文化を、足を運んで皆さんの目でみてみてください。

高松市街地の北 3kmにあるのが女木島である。女木島は、かつてはサワラ、マナガツオ、フグなどの漁が盛んな半農半漁の島であった。漁業人口が減少したとはいえ、男性人口の 3割が漁業に従事しており、この人達が中心になって祭りを支えている。

祭りの組の若中(l5~48歳)は女木島の住民の男性と女木島を故郷とする男性で組織されており、東浦組(東ノ組、中ノ組、西ノ組)、西浦組の4組に分かれ、各組頭取(総責任者)、取締(太鼓台責任者)、棒頭二人(屋台と会計担当)の三役で運営されている。当番の組は各組に対して諸般の指揮を L、各組はこれに服さなければならない。当番の組は束、中、西ノ組を順に回り、 2007年(平成19)は東ノ組であった。組の色は、束ノ組が白、中ノ組が豆絞り、西ノ組は黄、西浦は緑である。太鼓乗りの鉢巻きと腰ひも、取締(棒っき)と棒頭のタレに使われている。「香川県の祭り・行事 (香川県教育委員会)」より
