We headed to the terraced rice fields in Takasu, Tosa Town, Kochi Prefecture. This is the birthplace of the folk song ‘Tosa Shibakari-uta’, which Yataro Iwasaki sang whilst in a Goemon-style bath in the NHK drama ‘Ryōmaden’. It is an agricultural cultural landscape skilfully created by utilising the mountainous terrain and water resources of the upper reaches of the Yoshino River. The mountains and valleys formed by the geology of the Sanbagawa Belt have been utilised by winding irrigation channels along their slopes, allowing the limited flat land to be used as rice paddies.

What is even more fascinating is the ‘Tosa Shibakari-uta’. It is a work song sung whilst performing the arduous labour of gathering brushwood and grass from the mountains and field ridges to use as fertiliser for the rice paddies. The terraced rice fields, irrigation channels, mountain forests, villages, ancient place names, and the ‘Tosa Shibakari-uta’—when viewed together, it becomes clear that Takasu is not merely a ‘spectacular view of terraced rice fields’, but a cultural landscape shaped over a long period by the mountains, water, rice, and the lives of the people. The rice grown in Takasu’s terraced fields is so delicious because it benefits from a combination of factors: the cool climate at an altitude of approximately 600 metres, the significant temperature difference between day and night, the abundant mountain water, and the environment of the terraced fields built on the slopes. In particular, the coolness at night creates ideal conditions for the ripening of the rice.

Aikawa-mai Rice is a branded rice variety cultivated in the beautiful terraced rice fields of Tosa Town (formerly Aikawa Village) in Kochi Prefecture, situated at an altitude of 350–600 metres. It is renowned as one of the three major rice-producing regions of Tosa. The rice is grown using irrigation water so pure it is safe to drink, which flows from the water-retaining forests in the headwaters of the Yoshino River. The rich natural environment, characterised by high altitude and extreme temperature fluctuations—with a difference of as much as 15°C between day and night—concentrates the rice’s umami flavour. Varieties such as ‘Hinohikari’ are primarily cultivated, and the rice is carefully grown using a meticulous approach that minimises the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers.
Sameura Dam. Sameura Dam is one of Shikoku’s largest multi-purpose dams, situated in the upper reaches of the Yoshino River in northern Kochi Prefecture. Construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1973. The reservoir straddles Tosa Town and Motoyama Town, storing water from the Yoshino River. It is a facility that supports water resources for the four prefectures of Shikoku: Kochi, Tokushima, Kagawa and Ehime. Its most notable feature is that it distributes water from the Yoshino River system for widespread use across Shikoku. The dam’s water is utilised not only for power generation but also for agricultural, industrial and domestic water supplies to areas such as Kagawa Prefecture. For Kagawa Prefecture in particular, it is a vital source of water, supplied from the Yoshino River via the Kagawa Irrigation Canal. Although the upper reaches of the Yoshino River are one of Japan’s rainiest regions, there are significant fluctuations in rainfall from year to year. If a period of low rainfall persists, the dam’s storage level drops, leading to restrictions on water abstraction from the Kagawa Irrigation Canal and other sources. Another important role of the Hayameura Dam is flood control. During heavy rainfall, part of the water flowing in from upstream is stored in the dam, thereby reducing the flow rate to the lower reaches of the Yoshino River. Electricity is also generated using the water from the reservoir.

‘Tosa Shibakari Uta (A work song about cutting brushwood in Kochi)’ is a work song handed down in the Takasu district of Tosa Town, Kochi Prefecture. The lyrics weave together not only the life of a mountain village—such as brushwood cutting, preparing fertiliser for the fields and rice cultivation—but also themes of romance, human compassion, pride in one’s work and hopes for a bountiful harvest. Of particular significance is the fact that the song portrays the cutting of brushwood and the cultivation of rice as a single, continuous cycle of labour. Cutting brushwood and grass, using it as fertiliser for the fields, bringing the rice to fruition and reaping the harvest. And, beyond that way of life, starting a family—. The lyrics, ‘Cut brushwood, cut grass, work hard. This year we’ll reap the rice, and I’ll take a bride’, reveal that brushwood-cutting was not merely mountain labour, but a vital task underpinning rural life.
On the other hand, the song does not focus solely on work. It also depicts scenes of men and women crossing the mountains to meet their lovers—as in the line, ‘Crossing the bamboo-covered mountain, the cord of my ohan was wet with dew’—and features beautiful verses that liken human life to the bonds of affection, such as ‘Ayu dwell in the rapids, birds perch on trees, and people dwell in the shade of affection’. In a folk tale passed down in Tosa Town, a love story from the late Edo period—in which Tsuneemon of Takasu crossed the Sasayama Mountains to visit Okane in Tosa-yama Village—is also recounted in connection with this song.
Furthermore, as the verse ‘On the way there, the morning star; on the way back, the evening star’ suggests, brushwood gathering was arduous labour, involving work in the mountains from early morning until nightfall. At the same time, however, the song expresses pride in working in the mountains, as in the line ‘I am a brushwood gatherer from Tosa’. Finally, the song concludes with a wish for a bountiful harvest: ‘May this year be a good year, with ears of rice blooming upon the stalks’. From cutting brushwood in the mountains to fertilising the fields, bringing forth rice, people living their lives, falling in love, raising families and supporting the community—the great appeal of the ‘Tosa Brushwood-Cutting Song’ lies in the fact that this entire cycle of rural mountain village life is condensed into a single song. Furthermore, in the actual song, chanting phrases such as ‘No’, ‘Yuhō’ and ‘Yoshō’ are repeated to set the rhythm of the labour. This song, preserved in Takasu, not only documents the former occupation of brush-cutting but can also be viewed as a folk song that conveys the rural culture of the Yoshino River headwaters, where the mountains, rice fields, nature and people’s lives were inextricably linked.
